| WXHQ is a small, low-power FM radio station based in Newport, Rhode Island. It is run by the Newport Music Arts Association (a.k.a. the NMAA), a local non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the arts in the Newport area. WXHQ prides itself on presenting a rare alternative to mainstream, commercial radio, with programming that includes jazz, blues, r&b, bossa nova, Afro-Cuban, lounge, soul, funk, reggae, ska, electronic, downtempo, acid-jazz, surf, world, country, folk, and even occasionally some rock (sometimes all within the space of a single hour). Some times a little wild, some times a little weird, but always groovy, WXHQ - a new independent voice in radio. |
A STATEMENT FROM THE WXHQ STAFF | Music is one of the earliest forms of communication long before he could speak or write, man was dancing around an open fire, pounding on rocks and howling at the moon (and, as anyone who's ever been to a rave in Santa Cruz knows, we haven't come so far in the centuries since). In the simplest of notes and melodies a myriad of thoughts and emotions may be expressed, and one doesn't need to understand English to comprehend an aching jazz solo full of longing and regret Music is categorized and marketed to a disturbing degree on today's radio. Stations have no unique identity and seem to share a common, unimaginative play list based upon their carefully-targeted demographic and sound. So much of the best music of both today and the past is given virtually no airplay because corporate executives somewhere decided such music wasn't marketable.
